How to Create Your Virtual Observation 🎥

Hello Hero Maker! Ready to complete your observation? This page is where you’ll submit your observation.

This virtual option is designed to be flexible and convenient. Just follow the simple guidelines below to record your 15-minute session before uploading it using the form.

Observation Essentials

  • Length: Your recording should be 15 minutes long.
  • Content: You can deliver a portion of any SkillBase First Aid course you are licensed to teach.
  • Audience: The session must be delivered live to real people. This can be colleagues, friends, or family – it doesn’t have to be a formal course. What matters is your delivery in line with the SkillBase Way.

Recording Your Session: A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Prepare Your Participants 👋 Before you start recording, take a moment to reassure your participants. Clearly explain that you are filming a short observation of your training delivery, which will be reviewed and stored securely by SkillBase First Aid only to observe you as a trainer.

Step 2: Position Your Camera & Start Recording Set up your camera so that your participants are clearly visible. This is crucial for capturing their consent. Once you are ready, press record.

Step 3: Ask for Consent on Camera This is the most important step. At the very beginning of your recording, you must ask for consent using the following exact sentence:

“I will be filming this small section to use as an observation of my training practice only that will be reviewed by SkillBase First Aid, if you consent to participating please raise your hand.”

Don’t forget: Make sure your recording clearly captures your participants raising their hands.

Step 4: Deliver Your Session Proceed to deliver your 15-minute training session.

💡 Top Tips for Your Recording

Don’t worry if you’re not a technical expert! Creating your observation should be straightforward. Here are a few tips to help.

  • Recording on a Smartphone? You’re all set! Nearly all modern smartphones, including iPhones (Apple) and Android devices (like Samsung, Google Pixel, etc.), record in a compatible format. iPhones typically use .mov or .mp4, and Android phones usually use .mp4, which are both perfect for your upload.

  • What are File Formats? The file format is usually the 3 or 4 letters at the end of a filename after the dot (e.g., my-observation.mp4). You generally don’t need to do anything to change this as your device will create a compatible file automatically.

  • Keep it Simple Just use the standard video camera app on your phone or camera. You don’t need any special software to record your session.

Final Checklist Before You Upload ✅

Before you select your file below, please do a final check:

  • Does your virtual observation begin with the required consent script?
  • Are your participants visible on camera giving their consent?
  • Is the recording 15 minutes in length?
