Training for a healthy organisation

All our courses are now available online via our learning hub, courses are a combination of self-learning (via videos, workbook activities and reading) and live training sessions. Click here to find out more!

Our mission is simple, we create superheroes on standby! We are working with MHFA England to help turn 1 in 10 people in the UK into Mental Health Heroes.

Poor mental health costs UK employers up to £45 billion each year. But, the good news is, for every £1 spent by employers on mental health interventions, they get back £5 in reduced absence, presenteeism, and staff turnover (Deloitte, 2020).

Our Mental Health First Aid Training courses will minimise the impact of mental ill-health in your workplace. We guarantee that everyone who trains with us will leave as confident Mental Health First Aiders.

We are adapting all our courses to make them safe for you and our staff during the Coronavirus outbreak. To see the latest Covid-19 updates click here.

What is Mental Health First Aid?

Implementing Mental Health First Aid in the workplace

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training is a key component for creating a safe, healthy workplace where the mental health and physical health of employees are valued equally. It gives people the tools to support their own mental health and that of their colleagues and encourages them to access timely support when needed.

To be effective and have a sustainable impact, the training needs to be implemented as part of a strategic, whole organisation approach to wellbeing. This means, training employees in mental health awareness at a blend of levels.

SkillBase First Aid offer the full MHFA accredited training programme, including; Qualified Mental Health First Aider, Mental Health First Aid Champion, MHFA ‘Aware’ and Refresher courses. We also offer the Youth versions for those working with children aged 8-18.

SkillBase First Aid Bespoke courses, sessions and talks can also be arranged for organisations looking at specific topics to be covered as part of their wellbeing strategy, and/or to support their existing Mental Health First Aider’s in work. Learn more here

What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid, or MHFA is an internationally recognised training course, which teaches people how to spot the signs and symptoms of mental ill-health and provide help on a first aid basis. See details of course content here

We don’t train people to become therapists, we teach people to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis – and to potentially stop a crisis from happening.

Just like physical first aid, MHFA training is focused on an action plan that aims to preserve life, prevent further harm, and promote recovery, through practical skills that can be used every day.

According to the World Federation for Mental Health, “Employees favour a workplace that cares for their wellbeing and demonstrates support for wellbeing through a healthy work/life balance and strong diversity policies” (2017: Mental Health in the Workplace)

A Mental Health First Aider’s Story

“How to summarise the last couple of days? I have been on a journey of huge proportions. Gaining insight to the deepest parts of some ‘regular’ and ‘ordinary’ people; expanding my knowledge and avid interest in the subject of mental health; expressing myself in an incredibly candid and cathartic manner… I wholeheartedly underestimated the impact the Mental Health First Aid course could have on me. My faith in humanity, and the generosity in spirit of strangers, has taken a leap of restoration. I could not be more moved or grateful. And I implore anyone and everyone to take advantage of this life changing journey to enlightenment, courtesy of SkillBase First Aid.”
