  • An in-depth understanding of young people’s mental health and factors that affect wellbeing
  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
  • Confidence to reassure and support a young person in distress
  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening
  • Knowledge to help a young person recover their health by guiding them to further support – whether that’s through self-help sites, their place of learning, the NHS, or a mix – engaging with parents, carers and external agencies where appropriate
  • Ability to support a young person with a long term mental health issue or disability to thrive
  • Tools to look after your own mental wellbeing

A Mental Health First Aider's Story

"How to summarise the last couple of days? I have been on a journey of huge proportions. Gaining insight to the deepest parts of some ‘regular’ and ‘ordinary’ people; expanding my knowledge and avid interest in the subject of mental health; expressing myself in an incredibly candid and cathartic manner... I wholeheartedly underestimated the impact the Mental Health First Aid course could have on me. My faith in humanity, and the generosity in spirit of strangers, has taken a leap of restoration. I could not be more moved or grateful. And I implore anyone and everyone to take advantage of this life changing journey to enlightenment, courtesy of SkillBase First Aid."
